Reviving the Northern Basin:

maintaining and protecting aquatic habitats in the northern Darling Basin
Triple Helix Consulting was engaged by the Murray-Darling Basin Authority to facilitate the development of an integrated strategy for the long term protection and enhancement of important aquatic habitats in the northern Murray-Darling Basin.  These special places includeinternationally-recognised Ramsar wetlands and High Conservation Value Aquatic Ecosystems as agreed by the Australian and State Governments.  The first stage in this project was to facilitate a major project proposal to the Caring for our Country program to implement measures that would make an immediate difference in restoring, maintaining and protecting high conservation value aquatic ecosystems in the northern basin.

Paddock to Plate:

Food, Farming and Victoria’s Progress to Sustainability
With funding from the William Buckland Foundation, this project commissioned by the Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) explored the future of the Victorian food system (from paddock to plate) in a carbon, water and energy-constrained world.  The background paper and workshop presentation can be downloaded here.  The final report proposing policy propositions is here.

 

Evaluating the Invasive Animals CRC

Andrew Campbell chaired the Third Year Review Panel for the Invasive Animals Cooperative Research Centre (IACRC), providing feedback and recommendations to the Board of the CRC and the Department of Industry, Innovation, Science and Research (DIISR).

Rural Practice Change National Symposium.

Andrew Campbell organised and facilitated this national symposium at the University of Melbourne on 14 November 2008, attended by more than 400 people. The symposium explored the latest research on the factors influencing practice change on farms and in rural landscapes, led by Professor David Pannell of the University of Western Australia coordinating an all star cast of Australian extension researchers.  Presentations can be viewed and papers downloaded here.

Engaging the new Federal Government:  a communication plan for INFFER.

A consultancy for the University of Western Australia (Prof Dave Pannell) to draft a communication strategy aimed at the Canberra policy audience, for the Investment Framework For Environmental Resources (INFFER).

A strategic plan for cotton research

A short consultancy for the Cotton R&D Corporation (CRDC) providing strategic external input into CRDC's new Strategic R&D Plan 2009-2014.  

Managing Australian Soils

This project developed a policy discussion paper which explores how Australia could have a more coherent approach to investment in its soils to better deliver objectives including food and water security, drought resilience, carbon storage and reduced net greenhouse gas emissions.  It was commissioned by the Natural Resources Policies and Programs Committee of the Ministerial Council on Natural Resource Management, comprising representatives of all Australian jurisdictions. pdf 6Mb  

 

A Climate Change Primer for Regional Natural Resource Management (NRM).
This report commissioned by the Department of Climate Change reviews the science around regional climate change impacts and summarises key findings into a primer targeted at the Board members and senior staff of regional NRM and catchment bodies.  pdf 1.3MB   or   DCC website

A Knowledge Strategy for the North Central CMA
This project looks at how the North Central Catchment Management Authority, based at Bendigo in Victoria, could become a smarter investor in and manager of knowledge, and a more effective leader of wider community learning in the face of rapid environmental change. Available by request.

Climate Change Research Priorities for Australian Fisheries.  Report for the Fisheries R&D Corporation (FRDC) looking at potential climate change impacts on Australian fisheries and the sorts of research needed to better prepare the three key sectors of Australian fisheries — commercial, recreational and indigenous — for a period of rapid and sustaned environmental change.  | pdf |

How the US is tracking trends in its natural environment.  Study tour report for the Department of Industry, Innovation, Science and Resources looking at how the US is monitoring natural resources and analysing change processes, through the National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) and the National Centre for Ecological Analysis and Synthesis (NCEAS).  | pdf |

Terrestrial Ecosystem Research Network (TERN)   Sub-contracted by Professor Paul Perkins to assist in the early scoping and facilitation process for TERN, under the National Collaborative Research Infrastructure Strategy (NCRIS).

Improving Regional Arrangements for Natural Resource Management in Queensland.  Consultancy for the Queensland Regional Groups Collective (RGC) looking at policy options to improve the overall framework for NRM in Queensland.

Independent Review of the Basin Salinity Management Strategy (BSMS) Mid-Term Review  Membership of an independent panel (with Neil Byron and Roger Wickes) assessing the Mid-Term Review.

Development of presentation media for the Minister for Water Resources  Consultancy to DEWHA developing powerpoint slides and associated speech notes on water management in Australia and internationally.

CGIAR Challenge Program on Water and Food

Consultancy to the Challenge Program on Water and Food (CPWF) of the World Bank's Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR) to review the Phase II Research Plan for CPWF, and to participate in a strategic planning workshop for CPWF Phase II in Rome in June 2007.

National Agriculture and Climate Change Action Plan 2006-2009;  taking the next steps   Workshop facilitation and write-up for an implementation schedule for the NACCAP.

Sustainable Farming Systems course for Central West CMA  Presentation and workshop facilitation on the 'NRM big picture' for courses run by the Central West Catchment Management Authority (NSW).
